Heavy snow fall has caused congestion across our roads and at many airports…not to mention the channel tunnel we have all been hearing about!
The Daily Mail has reported this evening that blizzard like conditions hit some parts of the UK this afternoon again causing major disruption to the nation’s road and airports. Gatwick airport was forced to divert its flights this afternoon after it had to close its runways for de-icing and Luton airport shortly followed suit.
Road conditions were described as ‘treacherous’ and the emergency services reported as being ‘swamped’ with phone calls to attend road traffic accidents.
The AA released a statement that they had had their busiest day on the UKs roads for 10 years!
Calls to ambulance control rooms were inundated as people slipped on the untreated paths and roadways resulting in broken legs and arms.
Snow showers have been forecast over the next few days across various parts of the country however, can we really be certain where they were fall given the fact that no one was prepared for the snow fall we have just received?
Forecasters appeared to be in as much of the dark as we were when the snow kept coming.
The problem many of us are going to have over the next few days are the freezing temperatures which are going to turn all that snow in to sheets of ice. Many of the minor roads may not have been passed by grit lorries and will therefore by very dangerous. It is wise to avoid these road altogether and stick to the main roads as it is most likely they have been treated.
The met office has urged road users, particularly in Scotland, to only travel on the roads if absolutely necessary!
If you have to travel then make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to complete your journey and leave lots of room between yourself and the car in front of you to ensure that you will be able to stop your vehicle safely and in time.
