It is estimated that the 20mph zones could have the potential to prevent up to 700 casualties in London alone!
At the moment it is estimated that that one in five pedestrians are killed if hit by a motor vehicle at 30mph but at 20mph the chances are reduced to one in forty.
Studies carried out in areas already implementing the new speed limit have shown that cyclist injuries fell by 17% and pedestrian injuries were cut by almost one third.
The research carried out is fully supported by the statistics and RoSPA are supporting plans for the scheme to be implemented not only in UK cities but cities around the world.
It is clear to see that plans to bring in the 20mph speed limit are positive and can only be beneficial for the general public using the UK highways.
So, you may need to leave for work 5 minutes earlier but isn’t it worth it if it means that more and more lives will be saved on our roads.
Think twice before thinking you are ok to be doing 35mph in a 30 zone and use your initiative when travelling around areas where you know there are schools, parks and cycle lanes!
