The police are desperate for the driver of another van seen in the area at the time of the accident to come forward.
PC Matt Woollams-Seeney said “It is has been a week now since this collision occurred and we are still appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Mr Payne had served in Afghanistan and in Kuwait with the RAF, and he was based in North Yorkshire. The driver of the Ford Transit van involved in the collision, Mr Chris Cowdell, is one of many campaigners who have called for a crash barrier to be installed along the stretch of road where the traffic accident occurred.
The organisation responsible for the maintenance of the road, Wokingham Borough Council, said that it had been asking for money from the government to improve the safety of the area of road.
Although the Council are responsible for maintaining the road, at this point in the accident investigation there is no suggestion that the cause of the accident was due to a fault with the road layout or surface. However, without the evidence of the other driver who may have witnessed the accident, police may find it difficult to distinguish what caused Mr Payne’s vehicle to cross from one side of the road to the other and in to the path of oncoming traffic.
