The Highway Code is something all road users must abide by and if they fail to do so, some of the requirements can be a criminal offence and lead to prosecution. Knowing of the rules in the Highway Code is essential, especially for those driving on the roads, to avoid road traffic accidents (RTA).
Not all sections of the Highway Code are legal requirements, however they can be used in compensation or RTA claims in Court. They will help the judge evaluate who was negligent and who owed the duty of care.
The government says that knowing and applying the rules contained in The Highway Code could ‘significantly reduce road casualties’.
With ongoing campaigns to cut the number of deaths and casualties on the roads it is important that as road users we do everything we can to protect the safety of ourselves and of other road users. We all know that the roads are a dangerous place and the simplest mistake can cause an accident.
The government are constantly updating the law on road safety and it is our responsibility to keep up to date with it. If you are unsure where to find information about the latest driving regulations www.direct.gov.uk or www.dft.cov.uk/dvla are government websites and should give you all the information you need to know.
Although the government and The Highway Code are doing everything they can to cut down the number of road accidents, unfortunately in some cases they are unpreventable. If you become involved in a car accident and it isn’t your fault then you may be able to make a claim for injury compensation.
