Supermarkets, like everywhere else, have a duty of care to their customers. They have a duty to, as far as is reasonably possible, to minimise risks to customers’ health and safety. In doing so they must also abide by strict health and safety guidelines.
There are many potential risks in a supermarket – risks that have become real life accidents to many clients here at The Injury lawyers. These risks include slipping on a spillage that was negligently left uncleaned and unattended, tripping over an item left in the walkway of a shopping aisle, or having an item fall from a poorly stacked shelf – all causing you injury.
If you have an accident in a supermarket, you may not have your wits about you enough to remember to do many of these things I list below; but if you do, here are some actions which could help to strengthen your claim:
- Report the accident to a member of staff – an accident report can provide proof that an accident did actually take place.
- Seek medical assistance – you may be seen by a first aider at first but you should then see your GP or attend a hospital – this not only allows your injuries to be assisted with, but also allows a record to be made in your medical notes.
- Check for any witnesses – if there are witnesses present it is advisable to obtain their contact details as they may be able to provide valuable support to your claim.
- Seek the assistance of a specialist personal injury lawyer – this is best done directly with a law firm. I say this as there are many referral agents out there who simply act as middlemen by selling your claim on. They may sell it to a firm who pays the most money rather than a firm who gives the best service.
