There are three main procedures that are performed when it comes to skin resurfacing/rejuvenation, these are:
- Chemical Peels
- Dermabrasion
- Laser resurfacing
All of these carry with them inherent risks which can make making a claim quite difficult as there has to be some type of negligence to proceed with a claim for compensation. The three main things that are required are that the person should owe you a duty of care (which is implied between a medical practitioner and a patient), they must breach this duty of care, and they must have caused injury as a result of the breach. So what types of injury are caused?
- Scarring
- Changes in skin colour/pigmentation
- Burns
- Blisters
- Muscle tension is affected.
These are all caused by the negligence of the service provider. For example; if the chemical peel is left on the skin too long, too harsh a chemical was used on the skin, a laser was held too close to the skin; simply the procedure was just not performed as it should have been and consequently you have suffered from either one of the above or another type of injury.
One of the first things to do in these types of cases is (and I know it might not be the first thing that pops in your mind) take photographs. Photographs are essential evidence in ensuring that if your injury does resolve itself (be it over a few months or years) there is proof of the extent of the injury. It is also important to seek medical attention so that the injury is confirmed to be caused by negligence rather than an inherent risk.
