No Barriers on Scaffolding – Falling Injury Claims

Scaffolding or working from height can of course be very dangerous, especially if proper safety procedures are not in place. When working from height there is a lot for employers to consider. As with any job, safety should be of paramount importance and should never be compromised. When working from height workers need a proper and safe platform from which to work, and scaffolding can provide this. It is also a place where workers can keep tools etc but again there is need for caution to prevent any tripping hazards.

Not having barriers on scaffolding is clearly unsafe. Barriers could prevent injury and stop workers from falling if something does go wrong. Say a worker trips up on the scaffold itself or over equipment. A barrier may prevent the worker falling and therefore preventing serious injury.

If scaffolding is without barriers then workers are more likely to fall. A fall from height could result in serious injury (broken bones for example) or even death. When working from extreme height other precautions are often necessary, such as a safety harness.

When working on a building site or around scaffolding it is essential that workers are provided with appropriate protective equipment, this may include a hard hat, gloves, boots, high visibility vest etc. This equipment can help prevent injury or the extent of injury. Hard hats are a good example. When work is being carried out from scaffolding there is always a risk of equipment or tools being dropped from the scaffolding. Workers below could be in danger and a hard hat may prevent serious injury. The use of hard hats is and probably should be compulsory in this type of working environment.

Falling injuries can be fatal and therefore preventative measures should be taken very seriously. Appropriate barriers should be present on scaffolding to prevent workers from falling. If you have sustained injury due to an accident on scaffolding then you may be entitled to claim compensation from your employer. It is normally the responsibility of your employer’s insurance company to pay any damages awarded. Injuries can keep people out of work and out of pocket, not to mention medical bills and treatment costs. In addition to claiming General Damages for your injury and suffering, we can attempt to recover Special Damages for any lost earnings, treatment costs or other losses incurred as a result of the accident/injuries.
