The Injury Lawyers – taking action in the University of Greenwich Data Breach

loss of limb compensation

Data breaches that cause distress (which is common) falls within our remit here at The Injury Lawyers, and we have been advising victims of the University of Greenwich data breach, and have taken on cases for some of those affected.

We already represent victims for data breach compensation claims, including the University of Greenwich leak, so we are happy to help anyone who is a victim. The breach saw hundreds (although potentially thousands) of students affected when documentation was uploaded on the university website that included highly confidential and sensitive information.

Reams and reams of documents, meeting notes, staff comments, and personal documentation was available online. It is not yet known how this has happened, although the running hypothesis is that either they were uploaded without any understanding of the fundamentals of data protection, or they were uploaded accidentally (perhaps someone thought they were uploading them to a secure section of the site).

The result was disastrous when a whistleblower discovered the information and reported their concerns.

The university is in the process of writing to those affected, and students who have been informed have contacted us for help. Information leaked included: names and contact information; images of signatures; medical and sensitive personal information; progress reports and staff comments; to name a few…

This has exposed victims affected to fraud, given that personal information and signatures were available, and it has caused understandable distress as some victim’s personal and medical information was available for anyone to access. Some of the information may have been there for years and was accessible through the use of search engines.
