Trying to locate and pin point Britain’s most dangerous road has proven difficult. There are numerous different pieces of literature naming different roads to be Britain’s most dangerous. However, there were two roads that kept appearing across a variety of different sources.
These roads and the statistics they hold are as follows:-
* The A889 close to Dalwhinnie, Scottish Highlands is often classed as Britain’s most dangerous road. Drivers are twice as likely to have an accident whilst travelling on the this road than if they were travelling on what is considered to be Britain’s second most dangerous road the A537, located near Macclesfield in the Peaks.
* The A537 has been classified by EuroRAP (European Road Assessment Programme) with a black risk rating of high. Converted into statistics this simply means drivers are 30 times more likely to be involved in a Road Traffic Accident whilst travelling on this road, compared against the likelihood of being involved in a Road Traffic Accident on a road that is categorised as a green risk rating – which obviously, is lower.
It is often considered by drivers that motorways and dual carriageways are the most dangerous roads to drive on; however it is worth remembering that the two most dangerous roads in Britain named above are both rural roads. Statistics further back up this point, and show that drivers are three times more likely to be killed on a rural road than any other type of road.
