To you and me this is the surgical modification of the eyelid and can involve surgery on either the top lid, bottom lid or both. It is designed to turn back the clock on the area some consider to be the main one that “tells your age” – the eyes.
The procedure usually involves the removal of excess tissue, fat and skin which then requires removal or repositioning of the surrounding muscles. When done successfully, it can be life changing for those that have suffered with “ageing eyes” before their time or can simply give people their desired look. However, with such as invasive procedure of course comes the risk of negligence and consequently injuries that were not expected during the initial consultation.
There are obviously many inherent risks with cosmetic surgery and these should be explained to you in your initial consultation. It is important to understand that injuries arising from inherent risks are incredibly difficult to claim for as with all surgery – be that cosmetic or life saving – things can unfortunately go wrong.
However, when something is caused by negligence you do have the right to make a claim.
The main issue that can arise from Blepharoplasty is a condition called Lagophthalmos which is when the patient is unable to close the eyelids completely – this is often caused by “overenthusiastic” surgeons who remove excessive tissue, fat and skin therefore causing a “pulled back” effect. Now this can of course lead to further difficulties such as infection and abrasions of the eye, corneal drying and ulceration as the eye is not being cleaned fully (the process that occurs when blinking).
Another result can be that the surgeon does not remove the same amount of substance from both eyes resulting in the eyes looking completely different. This can of course sometimes be an inherent risk however in the extreme circumstances it can be caused by negligence by the surgeon to correctly perform the procedure and to correctly assess how much substance is to be taken away from the surrounding eye area.
Usually if you have suffered from these terrible things another operation is your only hope of them being resolved and this of course comes at a cost. Here at the Injury Lawyers when we pursue a claim for compensation we look to include all your losses present and future. We understand that it may not be the first thing that comes to your mind- however making a claim early- whilst memories and records are fresh is usually the best.
