There is a duty of care for salons and providers of beauty and cosmetic treatments to ensure that clients are not injured or suffer adversely as a result of procedures and work carried out. In the vast majority of cases where products are used, a patch test can be performed to identify any potential adverse reactions or allergies that may occur.
But sources from the BBC have recently confirmed that the number of salons who are not providing patch tests is huge, and victims are coming forward.
In a recently article from the BBC, investigations found that more than a third of beauty salons in areas of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire do not follow safety guidelines.
The guidelines say that patch testing should take place for eyebrow tinting and waxing 24 hours before the treatment is carried out – but because testing isn’t compulsory by law, it is not being adequately enforced.
The report tells of one teenage girl who was left hospitalised after an eyebrow wax and tint procedure was carried out incorrectly. The salon also failed to perform a patch test as well. Her face and throat were so swollen that she had significant difficulties breathing and was described by her mother as looking like a ‘monster’.
In her case, the salon has admitted liability, but compensation is yet to be agreed according to the article.
