A news report from the BBC confirms that a US lawyer who has been working for the victims of the allegedly dangerous vaginal mesh claims says that they are ‘as dangerous as asbestos.’ The lawyer, named in the report as Adam Slater, gave evidence to Members of the Scottish Parliament in the midst of an ongoing inquiry in to the safety of the devices.
In the report, US lawyer Slater suggests a cover up where women are ‘not told the truth’ about the safety of the devices.
Investigations from the MHRA appeared to suggest that there was little that the devices are in fact dangerous – reports that Slater says are influenced by manufactures who have a ‘close relationship’ with regulatory bodies.
In the US there are huge class action lawsuits against manufactures and doctors that are being brought by thousands of women who claim that the devices are defective and that they are not being warned of the dangers of having them. The parliamentary debates have been sparked by petitions for healthcare bodies to stop using them – and it’s important to note that there are medical practitioners out there who do refuse to use them due to safety concerns.
The MHRA report suggested that, whilst there are cases where implants have failed that have resulted in catastrophic damage to the victim, these are a minority. A lot of the blame has been shifted from the products themselves to poor surgical technique, a lack of quality aftercare, and failures to adequately warn of the risks of using the implants.
