From a young age children are taught to follow the green cross code in order for them to learn how to cross roads safely. Children begin to develop an understanding of crossing roads, this understanding grows as they get older and begins to show as a better understanding of the danger crossing a road possesses.
Knowing how to cross a road safely is essential for anyone to know, whatever their age, because it will probably be something we all do on a regular basis. Pedestrian crossings such as Zebra, Pelican and Puffin crossings are designed to ensure that pedestrians are able to cross the more busy roads safely.
Although pedestrians are aware of all of the crossings, some are not sure of the duty of care they should show to other road users when crossing them. For example a lot of pedestrians think that if they step onto a Zebra crossing the driver off an on coming vehicle must immediately stop. However according to the Highway Code this is not entirely true:
Rule 19 of the Highway Code
‘Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.’
If you have been injured in accident because a pedestrian ran out in front of you on a crossing then it is up to a court to decide who failed to show a duty of care. You may be entitled to make an injury compensation claim. The same goes to a pedestrian if you thought the driver was going to stop but they failed to do so.
