£6.3M Compensation Awarded to Brain Damaged Baby

The parents of a baby girl who suffered brain damage during birth have been awarded a payout of £6.3 million at the High court. The incident occurred at a hospital in Hertfordshire in November 2002, where Ellie Matraves was born clinically dead after being deprived of oxygen after a failure by staff at Lister hospital.

Head on Collision on Motorway Kills Five

A total of five people were killed in a head on collision on the M1 in the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident is believed to have occurred as a Polish driver turned his vehicle to head north on to the south bound carriageway just south of junction 11. Police believe that the Polish driver, who was driving a Volkswagen Passat, would have been travelling towards junction 10 where there were some road works and some road closures but that there was no reason for the vehicle to have turned round as the motorway was still open for through traffic.

Chlorine Leak Exposes Council

Almost 50 people have been affected by a chlorine leak in a swimming pool near Wolverhampton. According to the BBC website, emergency services were called to the swimming baths to treat the individuals involved who suffered symptoms such as difficulty breathing, nose and throat irritation, watering eyes and panic attacks.

Child abuse and the vivid horrific reality of it have hit the headlines recently. With cases such as Baby P and Alfie Goddard being brought to the public’s attention. Both these young boys suffered severely at the hands of their parents and guardians. Despite social services being made aware of the unimaginable circumstances these children were living in, nothing was done to protect them and save them from the cruelty they endured daily, resulting in their avoidable deaths.

Severe Weather Causes Chaos

The Met Office has warned that the snow fall this winter will be the worst in 18 years, and that “the UK winter has been the coldest for over a decade.” The cold snap has caused chaos in London with severe disruptions to the local transport system. As of the 2nd February, all London buses and tramlink services have been suspended. Flights have also been affected with many airports warning that there could be delays some cancellations. The advice is to check services and flights before setting off on journey, and if possible avoid travelling at all.

Crash Landing In The Hudson River

US Airways flight 1459 crash landed in the Hudson River between Manhattan and New Jersey on Thursday the 15th January 2009. The flight had just taken off from LaGuardia Airport and was on its way to Charlotte in North Carolina. The flight came into trouble minutes after takeoff, when it is believed it was hit by a flock of Geese.

Young Boy Found Sucking On Needle in Oldham Surgery

Cannon Street Health Centre in Oldham Manchester face legal action being brought against them after a 21 month old boy was found sucking on a hypodermic needle. Harvey Mills, 21 months, visited the surgery along with his mother for a routine vaccination for his younger brother. Whilst Harvey’s younger brother was receiving his vaccination, Harvey became inquisitive and wandered over to an open cupboard. Moments later Harvey was found with a hypodermic needle in his mouth.
