Invacare Birdie Lifters – changes to carabiners following incidents reported to MHRA

In the wake of recent updates from the MHRA surrounding alarming numbers of injuries and fatalities caused by the improper use of hoists, wheelchairs, and supportive seating, a manufacturer has changed the design of a carabiner used for its Birdie Lifters following reports of dangerous occurrences.

A field safety notice was issued in February and the MHRA reported the design change and the action to be taken in a bulletin published yesterday.

Warnings for safety belts used for supportive seating, wheelchairs, hoists & bathroom equipment amid reports of injuries and fatalities

This isn’t the first time there have been safety warnings surrounding the correct use of safety belts and posture belts for supportive seating, wheelchairs, hoists, and other assistive care equipment. Once again the MHRA has issued warnings to ensure that these belts are being correctly used because they pose a serious risk of injury and death when used incorrectly.

Warning to reduce number of diabetic children being admitted to hospital in Wales

According to sources from the BBC, a call for action to reduce the number of children with type 1 diabetes being admitted to hospital in Wales is required following significant rises in the number of admissions.

Following a recent study by several Welsh universities, children under 15 are five times more likely to need hospital care than non-diabetic children in Wales.

MHRA launches call for hormonal pregnancy tests investigation

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced the launch of a call for evidence in relation to oral hormonal pregnancy tests (HPT’s) like Primodos and their links to birth defects. HPT’s are no longer in use here in the UK (as well as many other countries) since the 1970’s following concerns over side effects in children.

Compensation scheme set up for patients affected by surgeon Roger Bainton

The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust has set up a compensation fund for victims of skull surgeon Roger Bainton who used an experimental bone substitute and performed unnecessary treatment on patients, the BBC has confirmed.

Mr Bainton was suspended in 2013 and 88 cases were investigated with the General Medical Council finding at least 18 cases of people being harmed.

Failures at Furness Maternity Ward led to baby deaths

The government have released details of an investigation in to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust where the deaths of mothers and babies have been attributed to failings at the maternity units.

The investigation found several serious failings, labelling the maternity ward at Furness General Hospital as “dysfunctional” in this latest damning report in to NHS quality of care.

Exploding manhole – near miss incident involving child

The BBC have shown footage of a manhole that explodes just seconds after a young child and two adults have walked passed it.

The disturbing footage shows the moment the manhole cover bursts open, propelling the cover and surrounding material around the area.
