Back Pain

I don’t know about you but I find that we are always being told different things following more and more research into back ache and to be quite frank, never know whether we are coming or going.

Many of us have suffered with back pain at some point in our lives; for many of us it can be severe and debilitating with a life of constant suffering.

We see experts, physiotherapists, chiropractors etc and what is the one thing they all reiterate? It is important to maintain a good posture at all times as poor posture is the most common cause of back pain amongst us.

Arrests Over Electric Gate Death

For those who have heard this story in the press recently, you will agree that it is such a tragedy. According to reports from the Mirror (source), police investigating the death of a six year old girl who was crushed by an electric gate have arrested two men on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence.

According to the report, the two men in question, both aged 38, had been sub-contracted to work on the 750kg gate in Moss Side, Manchester. The death of the young girl comes just days before an automatic gate in South Wales killed a five year old child; another story you may be aware of in recent news.

Enquiries in to the incident are ongoing, however the report also mentions that the developer of Faulkner Gates Ltd was fined £80,000, and ordered to pay £40,000 in costs, after a nine year old boy was crushed to death by an electric gate in Dorset.

NHS Mistake Lead To Tragic Death

A mistake made by The Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham has the cost the life of an innocent lady when they told Jane, 30, that she was “suffering from a migraine”. Jane Harrop was admitted to hospital after suffering very badly from severe head and neck pains; two days later Jane died of a rare brain virus.

This is a very tragic matter which should have been dealt with more efficiently by the NHS doctors. Jane was simply “dosed up on morphine and left to die in a corner” her husband reported. Her husband said that “doctors failed again and again to spot the fatal virus that was killing her and did not transfer her to a specialist brain ward at a nearby hospital because no beds were available”. Jane was given morphine by nurses and left in a bed where nurses “put bars around to stop her climbing out”. This is horrendous treatment for a patient to have to endure. The hospital is now placing an investigation to look into the circumstances of Jane Harrop’s death.

Bad Hair Day

This is a shocking story for all you ladies (or even men) out there who like to treat themselves to a new look in the local hair salon now and again. We’ve all done it at some time and many of us do it more often than not but are we leaving ourselves open to serious danger?

I’m talking about going for the elusive cut and colour of course.

We’ve all been doing our hair one day, looked in the mirror and thought “I fancy a change of colour” – we pick up the phone, make that call and don’t think anything more about it.

What happens when your re-style goes wrong, though? How devastating can it really be?

Hair Dye – Is It Worth It?

A lot of people don’t realise this, but certain regulations have to be followed in relation to hair colouring. People may think, “oh everyone gets their hair coloured, it won’t fall out it’ll be fine”. This could be the reason so many women unfortunately end up looking like this unfortunate lady (right).

As reported in the Re’Voil Hair & Beauty News Blog, the woman (in the picture) was immediately rushed to hospital as she was left temporary blind after a severe allergic reaction to hair dye. That’s right, this woman’s blindness was caused by hair dye!

Even more shockingly this woman also did carry out the 48 hour skin test a few days prior to this incident and had no reaction which led her to believe that this product was safe to use.

Lucky to be Alive – Car Accident Victim “Saved” by Four Leafed Clover!

Road traffic accidents are common – they happen all of the time. Modern cars are of course equipped as much as possible to deal with impacts and protect the occupants of a vehicle.  But of course there are occasions when an impact is so huge that serious injury cannot be prevented. According to this next miracle story from The Sun however, it’s not only the safety features of a car that can save us in a serious car accident…

According to the report (source), 20 year old survived a terrible crash by somewhat of a miracle that has only so far been explained by a four leaf clover! Yes, that’s right – a four leaf clover!

Mr Curry was close to death following a horrific crash after losing control of his vehicle, causing it to flip on to a wooden barrier. A post pierced right through Mr Curry’s body; however, A+E medical staff were amazed to discover that the post miraculously missed all of his vital organs! Not only this, but a four leafed clover was discovered stuck to his back by the medical staff, and thus the eerie conclusion was made. Certainly a miraculous story!

Chemical Controversy – Leak Leaves Several Injured

Chemicals can be dangerous – I’m sure we all understand that! So handling dangerous chemicals is important to get right when it comes to health and safety. Any failures can of course result in some serious suffering dependant on the nature of the chemical. I suppose the obvious one we at The Injury Lawyers have a good expertise in is asbestos – we’ve authored plenty of articles on the subject!

So here’s another recent incident that has left several people needing treatment – according to sources from Sky News, a chemical leak in Deeside has left three people hospitalised and a further 11 requiring treatment (source). The leak at a Deeside industrial estate in Flintshire required the attention of North Wales Fire and Rescue at the scene, with the incident described by them as “an uncontrolled mixture of chemicals released which produced chlorine gas.”

E. Coli Claims for Compensation – The Godstone Farm Twins Case

So – what’s worse than hearing about an incident where negligence has led to an individual suffering? Well, perhaps many of you will agree that it’s worse when the individual is a child. We all know that children are generally more susceptible to bumps, scratches and scrapes; it’s a part of growing up. But when they suffer due to the negligence of another and it could have been prevented, particularly in an environment where children are known to be, it’s a little harder to hear about.

According to sources from the BBC (source), the mother of the Godstone Farm E. coli twins is suing the petting farm they came in to contact with the bacteria from for negligently causing a significant amount of suffering and damage. I am sure many of you have heard of this story, round and about, in the press over the last 6-9 months, so you may know just how serious this is.

Refused a GP Appointment… for Being “Dead”

The NHS – it’s no secret that they’re fighting a losing battle. And I come across too many stories in the news of NHS failures that have lead to serious consequences for the victims involved. Although it’s a struggle enough for them, there are still instances of such minor failures that can have big impacts; and it begs the question – how do such little errors end up being made?

Well, this next story may shock you a little. Although the consequences haven’t been too serious, the potential for disaster is evident. According to sources from The Daily Mirror, 63 year old cancer patient Alan Campbell was refused an appointment over the phone… because the surgery claimed he is dead. Yes, that’s right; the NHS Operator refused him an appointment because, and I quote from the source, “Our records show you are deceased”. They could help no further.

Down the Drink Drive Limit?

According to several sources I have heard from, including the TV, the radio, and BBC news, a review of the current drink drive limit may result in the current legal limits being lowered. According to one report from the BBC, this kind of law change could be set to save hundreds of lives (source).

The review from Sir Peter North has suggested that lowering the legal limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg per 100ml would be a life saving move. This would actually put us in line with most of the rest of Europe; but including the 12 month ban, it would actually push us in to the harshest category for punishments! He has also suggested that the 12 month mandatory driving ban should extend to the new lower limit of 50mg.
